Sustainability

The ocean and its sustainability is everything to us at Circle One.  Without it, our business wouldn’t exist so we want to do everything we can to ensure future generations and ourselves can enjoy it for years to come.  We all have a responsibility to be as sustainable and green as possible and we aim to do our bit for our planet.

Products

Circle One products, from our surfboards to our wetsuits, are built to last. We believe in quality products not only so they will last for the customer, and be able to be enjoyed for as long as possible, but also to reduce the impact of product waste in the world. Buying a cheap bodyboard or wetsuit which you know will last for one summer and then be thrown away is a huge contributing factor to sustainability and environmental issues in the world. Each of our boards are hand-finished and a huge amount of knowledge, technology and passion go into every product to ensure they are high quality and strong.

We use limestone neoprene in our wetsuits which is more environmentally friendly than traditional petro-chemical neoprene. It uses more sustainable and less toxic resources during production and it lasts longer so you can enjoy your wetsuit for longer and less should end up in landfill.

We also use water based glue as traditional wetsuit glues can be incredibly pollutant with strong solvents and release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere.

Our carbon black, used in the production of neoprene, is made from recycled tyres. Using a waste product which is otherwise destined to stay forever in landfill for good, plus it reduces energy consumption and CO2 emissions in making materials from scratch.

We use dope-dyeing to put colour into our yarns and fabric for the outer and inner wetsuit linings and thread. This process has replaced traditional wet processing as it reduces the amount of water used significantly, and also reduces water pollution. It means dye pigments are put into the yarn at the very start of the process when the nylon is still plastic, instead of dyeing the yarns once they have been created.

Wetsuit Recycling

As a UK based surfboard and wetsuit manufacturer since the 60’s, our head office and shop are still located in the old factory in Crediton, about 5 miles from Exeter. We haven’t lost the knowledge of wetsuit making, and so can repair wetsuits here in order to make them last longer and prevent more wetsuits ending up in landfill. We can recycle some old wetsuits ourselves and can also use this neoprene in wetsuit repairs to create patches.

We have also partnered with the incredibly cool Barefoot. Tech, an innovative recycling company based in south Wales, who create beautiful and unique products out of old wetsuits and clothing.

If you have an old wetsuit you no longer want but don’t know what to do with, send it back to us at the address below, or, if you are able, drop it off in person at our factory in Crediton. Please include a note in your parcel saying that you wish to recycle your wetsuit. We will collect these and pass them onto Barefoot. Tech who are based in South Wales for them to be turned into beautiful new items. Recycle over landfill every time!

Marine plastic

With the current state of single use plastic pollution it is becoming increasingly common to stumble across bottles and other single use plastics in the surfing line-up. This is having a devastating effect on our ocean environment. We have already cut down on our plastic packaging for our products, with cardboard packaging for all our leashes, footwear, gloves, hoods and accessories, and are aiming to be 100% plastic free in the next few years.

We also have a long term relationship with legendary surf photographer, environmentalist and pioneer of The Plastic Project, Tim Nunn, to help raise awareness and educate others of the issue. We hope to help inspire others to help the cause and look after what we love.

We are also proud of our corporate partnership with the Surfers Against Sewage Ocean Network. We are part of a powerful network driving forward a movement for change and helping to protect the UK’s unique coastal environment.

People

As a lifestyle company, we are naturally part of a community sharing a passion for surfing and other watersports. We care about our staff, customers, suppliers, partners, organisations and charities, in the UK and all over the World. We work closely with staff at all levels of manufacture and ensure fair working conditions for all. We like to give back to the surfing and ocean community through partnerships and supporting charities such as The Wave Project and Surfers Against Sewage.
