It’s official! Surfing is in the Olympics 2021!
Who else is excited? As a sport, surfing has never had the exposure of on a level quite as large as the Olympic Games. As surfers we are extremely excited by this, to be able to share our sport with so many people worldwide is and should be a proud moment for every surfer.
Here are all of the questions we’ve been asked as one of the UK’s leading surf brands.
What type of surfboards will be used during the competition?
Olympic surfers will be representing the sport on shortboards, built for high performance surfing. Surfing in competition on this style of surfboard allows judges to critique and score accordingly inline with the guidance on how surfers present commitment and degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive manoeuvres on the wave, a combination of major manoeuvres, the variety of manoeuvres and if they are all performed with speed, power and flow.
Where is it taking place?
The contest will take place around 40 miles east of Tokyo, at a beach called Tsurigasaki Beach. Known for its consistent swell meaning year round waves Tsurigasaki offers fun looking waves, perfect for competition.
When is it on?
Surfing in the Olympics 2021 is going to be held during the Olympic Surfing Festival from July 25th to August 1st 2021. The reason it is being held during this timeframe is to ensure the ever changing elements of the ocean are aligned to provide the very best waves for the athletes taking part. It will take a total of 4 days to complete the competition.
Who’s representing the UK?
Unfortunately due to not qualifying, team GB will not have a surf team representing in the 2021 olympics. However a huge amount of training is being put in by the whole team and we’d like to wish them the best of luck to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic games.
