What is zidovudine?

Zidovudine is antiviral medicine. It is used to treat HIV infection, and to help prevent women from passing the HIV virus to the fetus during pregnancy. Zidovudine works by blocking the reproduction of the HIV virus.

Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you are taking stavudine, ribavirin, doxorubicin, or any medicine that contains zidovudine
  • you have an enlarged liver, high lactic acid levels in the blood, or abnormal liver function tests
  • you are allergic to any ingredient in zidovudine, any other medication, foods, dyes, preservatives or other substances
  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • you have bone marrow problems
  • you have low level of white blood cells
  • you are taking any prescription or nonpresciption medicine, dietary supplement, or herbal preparation

How to use:

  • As a rule, zidovudine administered as an injection at your doctor's office, clinic, or hospital
  • strictly follow your doctor's instructions if you are taking zidovudine at home
  • use zidovudine on a regular basis
  • don't stop taking zidovudine even if you fell better
  • If you miss a dose, use it as soon as possible; if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your dosing schedule
  • don't take two doses at one stroke

Safety issues:

  • Zidovudine may decrease your body's ability to fight infection. Keep clear of contacts with people who have colds or other infections
  • Never take more than it is prescribed
  • Zidovudine is not a cure for HIV infection. You may also still have infections oê other illnesses that occur along with HIV.
  • Zidovudine does not prevent you from giving HIV to other people through contact with blood or through sex. Use a barrier form of birth control (eg, condoms) if you have HIV.

  • fluconazole
  • probenecid
  • interferon alpha
  • ganciclovir
  • zalcitabine

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • severe allergic reactions (welling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)
  • unusual tiredness or weakness
  • chills
  • stomach pain
  • dark urine
  • shortness of breath
  • drowsiness
  • red, swollen, or blistered skin
  • fast breathing
  • muscle pain or aches
  • fever
  • seizures
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • tiredness
  • vomiting

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
