What is ribavirin?

Ribavarin is an antiviral medication. Ribavirin is used to treat hepatitis C when used in combination with interferon.

Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you are taking didanosine
  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • your sexual partner is pregnant or could become pregnant within the next 6 months
  • you have certain blood diseases (eg, thalassemia major, sickle-cell anemia)
  • you have a history of serious heart problems
  • you have severó kidney problems, or inflammation if your pancreas (acute pancreatitis)
  • you are also using interferon and have autoimmune hepatitis (liver problems caused by your own body instead of a virus) or severely decreased liver function
  • you are allergic to any medicines, foods, or other substances
  • you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, dietary supplement, or herbal preparation
  • you have used interferon before to treat hepatitis C and it didn't work
  • if you have a history of anxiety or other mood or mental disorders, thoughts of suicide, or suicidal behavior

How to use:

  • take ribavirin with food
  • drink as much fluids as possible, while taking ribavirin
  • take ribavirin on a regular basis
  • don't stop taking taking ribavirin even if you feel better
  • don't miss any doses
  • if you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember
  • avoid taking two doses at once

Safety issues:

  • It is known, that ribavirin may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Until you know your reaction to ribavirin, aviod driving, operating machinery or doing something else that requires mental alertness.
  • Aviod drinking alcohol, because it could worsen liver disease
  • use ribavirin in children and elder people with caution, because they may be more sensitive to it's effects

What drug(s) may interact with ribavirin?

  • anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
  • antiretroviral medicines for HIV infection
  • immunosuppressants (eg, cyclosporine)
  • didanosine
  • nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs)

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • yellowing of eyes or skin
  • weight loss
  • severe allergic reactions (swelling of the mouth, face,lips, or tongue)
  • vomiting
  • black, tarry stools
  • unusual or severe tiredness and fatigue
  • changes in hearing, taste, or vision
  • unusual mental or mood changes
  • unusual bruising or bleeding
  • chest pain
  • trouble sleeping
  • dark urine
  • decrease in the amount of urine
  • thoughts of suicide
  • fever, chills, or sore throat
  • sinus problems
  • hair loss
  • shortness of breath
  • irregular heartbeat
  • severe stomach or back pain
  • joint pain
  • severe headache
  • loss of appetite
  • rapid breathing
  • muscle pain or weakness
  • prolonged nausea and vomiting
  • numbness or tingling of arms or legs
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • weakness or fatigue
  • cough
  • upset stomach
  • dizziness
  • tiredness
  • dry mouth
  • nausea or vomiting
  • dry skin
  • mild headache
  • loss of appetite

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
