What is Promethazine?

Promethazine is an antihistamine. It is used to relieve moderate to severe allergic reactions, to reduce or prevent nausea and vomiting from illness or motion sickness. Promethazine is also used to make you sleep before surgery and to help you with pain relief or nausea after surgery.

Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • you are allergic to Promethazine, any other medicine, foods, dyes, preservatives, or other substances
  • you haver kidney or liver disease
  • you have asthma or congestive lung disease
  • you have seizures (convulsions)
  • you have diabetes
  • you have pain or difficulty passing urine
  • you have glaucoma
  • you have prostate trouble
  • you have high blood pressure or heart disease

How to use:

  • Strictly follow your doctor's instructions
  • Take your doses at regular intervals
  • If you are taking Promethazine to stop you getting car (travel) sick, take the first dose 30 to 60 minutes before you leave
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can
  • Avoid taking double or extra doses

Safety issues:

  • Promethazine may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other tasks that require mental alertness until you know how Promethadine affects you.
  • Promethazine may cause dry eyes and blurred vision. If so, use lubricating drops.
  • Keep out of the sun, or wear protective clothing outdoors and use a sunscreen.

What drug(s) may interact with Promethazine?

  • medicines for movement abnormalities as in Parkinson's disease, or for gastrointestinal problems
  • bromocriptine
  • medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
  • doxercalciferol
  • medicines for diabetes that are taken by mouth
  • epinephrine
  • levodopa
  • metrizamide
  • metoclopramide

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • blurred vision
  • unusual tiredness
  • fainting spells
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • irregular heartbeat, palpitations or chest pain
  • sore mouth, gums, or throat
  • muscle or facial twitches
  • slowed or shallow breathing
  • nightmares, agitation, nervousness, excitability
  • skin rash
  • pain or difficulty passing urine
  • seizures (sonvulsions)
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • stuffy nose
  • increased sensitivity to the sun
  • drowsiness, dizziness
  • headache
  • dry mouth

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
