What are cyproheptadine tablets?

Cyproheptadine is an antihistamine. It is used to treat allergies and mild hives. It may also be used to treat cinditions, which aren't listed in use instructions. Cyproheptadine may also be used to fight SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction.

Avoid using Cyproheptadine if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Cyproheptadine
  • you are breast-feeding a baby
  • you have peptic ulter, an enlarged prostate, an obstruction of the urinary tract, narrow-angle glaucoma, peptic ulcer or you are elderly and obilitated

Before using Cyproheptadine:

ALert your doctor immediately if you have any medical conditions, espicially like those listed below:
  • if you are taking any prescribed or non-prescribed medication, dietary supplement or herbal prepareation
  • if you are allergic to any other medicines, dyes, foods or other substances
  • if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • of you have high blood pressure, glaucoma, seizures, gastric or urinary tract obstruction, overactive thyroid, sromach problems, asthma, prostate problems
Some drugs may interfere with Cyproheptadine. Alert your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
  • MAO inhibitors (eg, phenelzine) because psychotic reactions may occur
  • Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine) because their effectiveness may be decreased
This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Cyproheptadine may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Cyproheptadine:

Use Cyproheptadine stricly as prescribed by your doctor. For exact dosing instructions read the medicine's label.
  • if your stomach is upset because of the Cyproheptadine, it can be taken with food
  • If you forgot to take your dose, do it as soon as you remember. But be careful not to take the double dose.
If only one dose was missed, you can take the rest of your scheduled doses for the day at evenly spaced intervals.

Important safety information

If your condition haven't improved in 2-3 days, you should contact your doctor.

Until you know if loratadine makes you drowsy or dizzy, do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness.

Do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This reduces the risk of dizzy or fainting spells.

Avoid drinking alcohol.

Do not use Cyproheptadine in infants and children without preliminary consultation with your doctor.

Possible side effects of Cyproheptadine:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)
  • convulsions
  • dark urine
  • difficulty urinating
  • hallucinations
  • hysteria
  • mental/mood changes
  • pounding or irregular heartbeat
  • stomach pain
  • unusual tiredness
  • yellowing eyes or skin.
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you'll need to contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • Abnormal skin sensations
  • blurred vision
  • changes in appetite
  • changes in menstrual flow
  • changes in weight
  • chills
  • confusion
  • constipation
  • diarrhea
  • dizziness
  • double vision
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth, throat, and nose
  • earache
  • early menstruation
  • exaggerated sense of well-being
  • excessive sweating
  • excitation
  • feeling of a whirling motion
  • frequent urination
  • headache
  • incoordination
  • irritability
  • low blood pressure
  • nausea
  • nervousness
  • restlessness
  • ringing in the ears
  • sensitivity to light
  • sleeplessness
  • stuffy nose
  • thickening of the mucus in the nose/throat
  • tightness of chest
  • upset stomach
  • urinary retention
  • vomiting
  • weight gain
  • wheezing.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
