What is Nortriptyline?

Nortriptyline was invented to treat depression. It belongs to tricyclic antidepressants. It helps to elevate mood by increasing the activity of certain chemicals in the brain.

Tell your doctor if any of these applies to you:

  • breast-feeding
  • an alcohol problem
  • stomach disease
  • pregnant or trying to become pregnant
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to nortriptyline, any other medicines, foods or dyes
  • seizures (convultions)
  • schizophrenia
  • Parkinsons's disease
  • over active thyroid
  • liver disease
  • heart disease, or recent heart attack
  • asthma, difficulty breathing
  • glaucoma
  • difficulty passing urine, prostate trouble
  • diabetes
  • blood disorder or disease

Safety issues:

  • Nortriptyline may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Until you know your reaction to fluvoxamine, aviod drvinig, operating machinery or doing something else that requires mental alertness.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other antidepressants to preclude mixing and effects adding.
  • Some children or teenagers may experience the increase of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The risk increases if individual have bipolar ilness (also called manic-depressive illness), a family history of bipolar illness, or a history of attempting suicide. Pay close attention to changes in moods or actions, especially if changes occur suddenly.
  • Full effect of nortriptyline may be reached in several weeks (up to 8)

How to use:

Strictly follow your doctor's insructions. Advert to medicine label to get the exact dosing instructions.
  • Medication Guide is an additional patient information sheet. It comes with the nortripyline.
  • You may take nortriptyline either with or without food.
  • Don't stop taking nortriptyline until your doctor said so.
  • If you miss a dose, and you are prescribed to take one dose daily, take the missed dose the same day. If you are taking more than one dose daily, skip thó missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Never take two doses at one stroke.

What drug(s) may interact with nortriptyline?

Do not take nortriptyline with any of the following medications:
  • astemizole (Hismanal®)
  • cisapride (Propulsid®)
  • probucol
  • terfenadine (Seldane®)
  • thioridazine (Mellaril®)
  • medicines called MAO inhibitors-phenelzine (Nardil®), tranylcypromine *(Parnate®), isocarboxazid (Marplan®), selegiline (Eldepryl®)
  • other medicines for mental depression (may be duplicate therapies or cause additive side effects)
Nortriptyline may also interact with any of the following medications:
  • alcohol
  • antacids
  • atropine and related drugs like hyoscyamine, scopolamine, tolterodine and others
  • barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions), such as phenobarbital
  • blood thinners, such as warfarin
  • bromocriptine
  • bupropion
  • cimetidine
  • clonidine
  • cocaine
  • delavirdine
  • diphenoxylate
  • disulfiram
  • donepezil
  • drugs for treating HIV infection
  • female hormones, including contraceptive or birth control pills and estrogen
  • galantamine
  • herbs and dietary supplements like ephedra (Ma huang), kava kava, SAM-e, St. John's wort, valerian, or others
  • imatinib, STI-571
  • kaolin; pectin
  • labetalol
  • levodopa and other medicines for movement problems like Parkinson's disease
  • lithium
  • medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems
  • medicines for colds, flu and breathing difficulties, like pseudoephedrine
  • medicines for hay fever or allergies (antihistamines)
  • medicines for weight loss or appetite control
  • medicines used to regulate abnormal heartbeat or to treat other heart conditions (examples: amiodarone, bepridil, disopyramide, dofetilide, encainide, flecainide, ibutilide, mibefradil, procainamide, propafenone, quinidine, and others)
  • metoclopramide
  • muscle relaxants, like cyclobenzaprine
  • other medicines for mental or mood problems and psychotic disturbances
  • prescription pain medications like morphine, codeine, tramadol and others
  • procarbazine
  • seizure (convulsion) or epilepsy medicine such as carbamazepine or phenytoin
  • stimulants like dexmethylphenidate or methylphenidate
  • some antibiotics (examples: erythromycin, gatifloxacin, levofloxacin, linezolid, moxifloxacin, sotalol, sparfloxacin)
  • tacrine
  • thyroid hormones such as levothyroxine

Possible side effects of nortriptyline:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • yellowing of the eyes or skin
  • abnormal production of milk in females
  • unusual weakness or tiredness
  • blurred vision or eye pain
  • tremor (shaking)
  • breast enlargement in both males and females
  • tingling, pain, or numbness in feet or hands
  • confusion, hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that do not exist in reality)
  • swelling of the testicles
  • difficulty breathing
  • stomach pain
  • fainting spells
  • sexual difficulties
  • fever
  • seizures (convulsions)
  • irregular or fast, ppunding heartbeat, palpitations
  • pain or difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder control
  • muscle stiffness or spasms
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • weight gain or loss
  • anxiety
  • skin rash or itching
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • nausea, vomiting
  • drowsiness or dizziness
  • loss of appetite
  • dry mouth
  • increased sensitivity of the skin to sun or ultraviolet light
  • headache

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
