What is Nimodipine?

Nimodipine is a calcium channel blocker. It is used to treat subarachnoid hemmorrhage, a condition when severe headaches and siff nech are caused by bleeding into the space around the brain.

Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • you are allergic to Nimodipine, other medicines, foods, dyes, preservatives, or other substances
  • you have heart problems, slow heart rate
  • you have previuos heart attack
  • you have lever disease
  • you have low blood pressure

How to use:

  • Strictly follow your doctor's instructions
  • Follow the directions on the prescription label
  • Take your doses at regular intervals
  • Do not stop taking Nimodipine until you are told so by your doctor

What medicines may interact with Nimodipine?

Do not take Nimodipine with any of the following:

Nimodipine may also interact with the following medications:

  • barbiturates such as phenobarbital
  • bosentan
  • calcium salts (intravenous)
  • cimetidine
  • herbal or dietary supplements such as gingko biloba, ginseng, hawthorn, ma huang (ephedra), melatonin, St. John's wort, went yeast
  • imatinib, STI-571
  • local anesthetics or general anesthetics
  • medicines for fungal infections (fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole)
  • medicines for high blood pressure
  • medicines for HIV infection or AIDS
  • medicines for prostate problems
  • medicines for seizures (carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone)
  • rifampin, rifapentine, or rifabutin
  • some antibiotics (clarithromycin, erythromycin, telithromycin, troleandomycin)
  • some medicines for heart-rhythm problems (amiodarone, diltiazem, verapamil)
  • some medicines for depression or mental problems (fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, nefazodone)
  • valproic acid
  • water pills (diuretics)
  • yohimbine
  • zafirlukast
  • zileuton

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • unusual weakness or tiredness
  • difficulty breathing
  • unusual bleeding or bruising, red spots on skin
  • dizziness or drowsiness
  • swelling if the legs or ankles
  • irregular or fast heartbeats (palpitations)
  • slow heartbeat
  • lightheadedness or fainting
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • sweating
  • flushing
  • nausea
  • headache

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
