What is Fluvoxamine?
Fluvoxamine was created to help people to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder. It increases the activity of serotonin, which affects behavior.Tell your doctor if:
- you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- you are taking or have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor (eg, phenelzine) within the last 2 weeks
- you are breast-feeding a baby
- you are allergic to fluvoxamine, any other medicines, dyes, or foods
- you are taking sibutramine, tizanidine, alosetron, cisapride, cyproheptadine, St. John's wort, I-tryptophan, astemizole, pimozide, terfenadine, tramadol, a phenothiazine (eg, thioridazine), fenfluramine and it's derivatives
Safety issues:
- It is known, that fluvoxamine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Until you know your reaction to fluvoxamine, aviod driving, operating machinery or doing something else that requires mental alertness.
- Avoid drinking alcohol or taking other antidepressants to preclude mixing and effects adding.
- Some children or teenagers may experience the increase of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The risk increases if individual have bipolar ilness (also called manic-depressive illness), a family history of bipolar illness, or a history of attempting suicide. Pay close attention to changes in moods or actions, especially if changes occur suddenly.
- Full effect of fluvoxamine may be reached in several weeks (up to 8)
How to use:
Strictly follow your doctor's insructions. Advert to medicine label to get the exact dosing instructions.- Medication Guide is an additional patient information sheet. It comes with the fluvoxamine.
- You may take fluvoxamine either with or without food.
- Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefeuit juice while taking fluvoxamine.
- Don't stop taking fluvoxamine until your doctor said so.
- If you miss a dose, and you are prescribed to take one dose daily, take the missed dose the same day. If you are taking more than one dose daily, skip thó missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Never take two doses at one stroke.
What drug(s) may interact with fluvoxamine?
- Tramadol, anorexiants (eg, phentermine), tetracyclic antidepressants (eg, trazodone), busiprone, sumatriptan, butyrophenones (eg, haloperidol), selegiline, dextromethorphan, MAO inhibitors (eg, phenelzine) , fenfluramine and its derivatives, metoclopramide, lithium, linezolid, I-tryptophan.
- Risperidone or cyproheptadine
- Tricyclic antidepressants (eg, amitryptiline), alosetron, tizanidine, anticouagulants (eg, warfarin), theophylline, aripiprazole, tacrine, sibutramine, aspirin, atypical antipsychotics (eg, clozapine), benzodiazepines (eg, diazepam), serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (eg, atomoxetine), beta-blockers (eg, propranolol), butyrophenones (eg, haloperidol), risperidone, butyrophenones (eg, haloperidol), carbamazepine, cisapride, cyclosporine, propafenone, pimozide, H1 antagonists (eg, astemizole, terfenadine), hydantoins (eg, phenytion), liyhium, methadone, phenothiazines (eg, thioridazine), St. John's wort.
Possible side effects of Fluvoxamine:
If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:Worsening of depression; severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, swelling of the mouse, face, lips or tongue); vision problems; bizzare behavior; tremor; difficulty swallowing; suicidal thoughts or behaviors; fast heartbeat; sleeplessness; fever; sever restlessness; mental or mood changes (eg, agitation, panic, hostility, irritability); severe nervousness or anxiety, seizures, pounding in the chest.
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
Weakness; changes in taste; vomiting; changes in sexual function; tooth disorder; chills; constipation; tiredness; sweating; nervousness; delayed ejaculation; diarrhea; nausea; loss of appetite; dizziness; drowsiness; indigestion; inability to have an oragsm; dry mouth; fatigue; haedache; gas; flu-like symptoms; flushing; frequent urination.
What is the shelf life of the pills?
- The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
