What is Loperamide?

Loperamide is a synthetic piperidine derivative. It is used to control and releive the symptoms of diarrhea including traveler's diarrhea and the diarrhea associated with inflammatory bowel diseases.

Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • you have a black or bloody stool
  • you are allergic to Loperamide, any other medicine, foods, dyes, preservatives, or other substances
  • you have a bacterial poisoning
  • you have severe abdominal pain, swelling or bulging
  • you have colitis or micus in your stool
  • you have liver disease
  • you have fever
  • you are taking an antibiotic medication for an infection
  • You have diarrhea for more than 2 days

How to use:

  • Strictly follow your doctor's instructions
  • Advert to Medication Guide if necessary
  • Take your doses at regular intervals
  • Only take this medicine while continue to have loose bowel movements
  • Safety issues:

    • Do not take Loperamide for more than one week
    • If your symptoms do not improve within 2 days, contact your doctor at once
    • Loperamide may cause dizziness or drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other tastks that require mental alertness until you know how Loperamide affects you

    • quinidine
    • alosteron
    • metoclopramide
    • cholestyramine
    • cisapride
    • erythromycin

    Possible side effects:

    If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
    • stomach pain
    • black or bloody stools
    • skin rash
    • bloated, swollen feeling in your abdomen
    • loss of appetite
    • blurred vision
    These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
    • tiredness
    • drowsiness
    • dizziness
    • nausea
    • vomiting
    • dry mouth
    • constipation

    What is the shelf life of the pills?

    • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
