What is Piroxicam?
Piroxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It helps relieves pain and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:
- you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
- you are allergic to Piroxicam, any other medicine, foods, dyes, preservatives, or other substances
- you have had a severe allergic reaction (eg, severe rash, hives, trouble breathing, growths in the nose, dizziness) to aspirin or an NSAID (eg, ibuprofen, celecoxib)
- you have recently had or will be having bypass heart surgery
- you are in the last 3 months of pregnancy
- you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, dietary supplement, or herbal preparation
- you have poor health, low blood sodium levels, dehydration or low fluid volume, you drink alcohol, or you have a history of alcohol abuse
- if you have a history of kidney or liver disease, diabetes, or stomach or bowel problems (eg, bleeding, perforation, ulcers)
- if you have a history of swelling or fluid buildup, asthma, growths in the nose (nasal polyps), or mouth inflammation
- if you have high blood pressure, a blood disorder, bleeding or clotting problems, heart problems (eg, heart failure), or blood vessel disease, or if you are at risk for any of these diseases
How to use:

- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember
- Avoid taking double or extra doses
Safety issues:
- Piroxicam may cause dizziness or drowsiness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Piroxicam with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
- Serious stomach ulcers or bleeding can occur with the use of Piroxicam. Taking it in high doses or for a long time, smoking, or drinking alcohol increases the risk of these side effects. Taking Piroxicam with food will NOT reduce the risk of these effects. Contact your doctor or emergency room at once if you develop severe stomach or back pain; black, tarry stools; vomit that looks like blood or coffee grounds; or unusual weight gain or swelling.
What medicines may interact with Piroxiacam?
- diuretics (eg, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide)
- angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors (eg, enalapril)
- anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
- aspirin
- selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (eg, fluoxetine)
- corticosteroids (eg, prednisone)
- heparin
- probenecid
- sulfonylureas (eg, glipzide)
- sulfonamides (eg, sulfamethoxazole)
- hydantoins (eg, phenytoin)
- lithium
- methotrexate
- quinolones (eg, ciprofloxacin)
- cyclosporine
Possible side effects:
If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:- yellowing of the skin or eyes
- severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; trouble breathing;
- tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue) *vomit that looks like coffee grounds
- bloody or black, tarry stools
- vision or speech changes
- change in the amount of urine produced
- unusual tiredness or weakness
- chest pain
- unusual joint or muscle pain
- confusion
- unusual bruising or bleeding
- dark urine
- swelling of hands, legs or feet
- depression
- sudden or unexplained weight gain
- fainting
- fast or irregular heartbeat
- shortness of breath
- fever, chills or persistent sore throat
- severe vomiting
- severe or persistnent stomach pain or nausea
- mental or mood changes
- numbness of an arm or leg
- red, swollen, blistered or peeling skin
- severe headache or dizziness
- seizures
- stomach upset
- constipation
- nausea
- diarrhea
- heartburn
- dizziness
- headache
- gas
What is the shelf life of the pills?
- The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
