Doxycycline is an antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, such as stomach, bone, skin, respiratory tract, urinary tract, sinuses, and ear infections. It can also be used to treat certain sexually transmitted diseases.

Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you are taking penicillins (eg, amoxicillin), acitretin, or oral contraceptives (eg, birth control pills)
  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregant, or are breast-feeding
  • you are allergic to Doxycycline, any other medicine, foods, dyes, preservatives, or other substances
  • you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, dietary supplement or herbal preparation
  • you have diarrhea, a stomach or intestinal infection, or the blood disease porphyria

How to use:

  • As a rule, doxycycline is given as an injection at your doctor's office, clinic, or hospital
  • Strictly follow your doctor's instructions, if you are using Doxycycline at home
  • Use Doxycycline at the same time each day
  • Don't stop using Doxicycline until your doctor said so, even if you start to feel better
  • If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember
  • Avoid using double or extra doses

Safety issues:

  • Long-term or repeated use of Doxycycline may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.
  • Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
  • Doxycycline may cause you to become sunburned more easily. Avoid the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths until you know how you react to Doxycycline. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothing if you must be outside for more than a short time.
  • Hormonal birth control (eg, birth control pills) may not work as well while you are using Doxycycline. To prevent pregnancy, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms).

What medicines may interact with Doxycycline?

  • oral contraceptives (eg, birth contorl pills)
  • anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
  • barbiturates (eg, phenobarbital)
  • acitretin or isotretinoin

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • severe reaction to the sun
  • severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, itching, swelling of the mouth, lips, face, or tongue; tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing)
  • vaginal irritation or discharge
  • bulging soft spots in infants
  • pain, swelling or redness at the injections site
  • headache and/or blurred vision
  • increased pressure in the head
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • skin inflammation in the anal and genital areas
  • difficulty swallowing
  • sensitivity to sunlight
  • infalmmation of the tongue
  • purple patches under the skin
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
