What is oxybutynin?

Oxybutynin is used to treat bladder problems, such as painful urination, loss of bladder control, urinary urgency, frequency, or leakage). Oxybutynin belongs to anticholinergics and works by relaxing muscles in the bladder.

Tell you doctor if any of these apply to you:

• you have a history of liver or kidney problems, myasthenia gravis, an overactive thyroid, an enlarged prostate, glaucoma, or if you are at risk for glaucoma
• you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
• you have a history of heart problems (eg, heart failure, fast or irregular heartbeat), hiatal hernia, stomach or bowel problems (eg, colitis, inflammation), esophagus problems (eg, reflux disease, inflammation), nervous system problems, or high blood pressure
• you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, dietary supplement or herbal preparation
• you have trouble urinating
• you are allergic to any ingredient in oxybutynin, any other medicine, foods, dyes, preservative, or other substances

How to use:

• You may take oxybutynin either with or without food.

• phenothiazines (eg, chlorpromazine)
• bisphosphinates (eg, alendronate)
• macrolide antibiotics (eg, erythromicin)
• azole antifungals (eg, ketoconazole)
• anticholinergics (eg, scopolamine)

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:

• vision problems
• severe allergic reactions (swelling of the mouth, lips, or tongue; rash, hives, itching, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing)
• swelling of the handes, ankles, or feet
• confusion
• seizures (convulsions)
• painful or difficult urination
• hallucinations
• fever
• arrythmic heartbeat

These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):

• trouble sleeping
• blurred vision
• taste changes
• constipation
• stomach pain
• diarrhea
• nausea
• dizziness
• drowsiness
• indigestion
• dry eyes, nose, skin, or mouth
• headache

What is the shelf life of the pills?
