Valproic acid helps you to control seizurez (convultions) in certain types of epilepsy. valproic acid is also used for other conditions, such as treatment of manias, migraines, bipolar disorder, and behavioral problems connected to Alzheimer's disease or dementia.Do not valproic acid if:
- you have low blood proteins
- you have brain damage or disease
- you have blood disease
- you have liver disease
- you have kidney disease
- you have urea cycle disorder (UCD)
- you have unusual or allergic reaction to valproic acid, any other medications, dyes, foods, or preservatives
- You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- You are breast-feeding a baby
How to use valproic acid:
Strictly follow the instructions on thr prescription label. You can either swallow thó capsules whole or drink them with water. If valproic acid makes your stomach upset, take it with food or milk, but, avoid taking it with carbonated drinks. Time intervals between taking valproic acid evenly. Never take valproic acid more often than prescribed.Important safety information:
There are several drugs which may interfere with valproic acid:- sevelamer
- isoniazid
- medicines for mental depression
- medicines for mental problems and psychotic disturbances
- agents that dissolve blood clots
- alcohol
- antacids
- aspirin
- other seizure (convulsion) or epilepsy medicines
- antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen)
- barbiturate medicines for including sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
If at you are treating epilepsy (seizures) with valproic acid, don't stop the treatment course suddenly. This may increase the risk of seizures.
You may get drowsy, dizzy, or have blurred vision. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how valproic acid affects you. To reduce dizzy or fainting spells, do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. Alcohol can increase drowsiness and dizziness. Avoid alcoholic drinks.
What is the shelf life of the pills?
- The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
