What is Loratadine?
Loratadine (Alavert™, Claritin®, Claritin® Reditab, Claritin® Hives Relief) belongs to antihistamines. It decreases hay fever symptoms,such as itchy,watery eyes, runny nose or sneezing) and also able to cure hives and associated itching of the skin.
What should my doctor know before I take this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have any of these:
- kidney disease
- liver disease
- asthma
- an unusual or allergic reaction to loratadine, other medicines, dyes, foods or preservatives
- if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
- if you are breast-feeding a baby
How should I take this medicine?
Take loratadine at evenly spaced time intervals. You can take either with food or without it. Never take your medicine more often than prescribed.If you are taking Claritin® Reditabs or Alavert™: Place the tablet on your tongue, allow to dissolve completely and then swallow. You can take the Claritin® Reditabs or Alavert™ tablets with or without water.
What happens if I miss the dose?
If you forgot to take your dose, do it as soon as you remember. But be careful not to take the double dose.
What drug(s) may interfere with loratadine?
- medicines for HIV or AIDS
- medicines for fungal infections (ketoconazole, fluconazole, voriconazole or itraconazole)
- antibiots (such as erythromicin or clarithromicin)
Also, the following medicines can make you feel drowsy:
- alcohol
- barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
- medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as alprazolam, diazepam or temazepam
- medicines for hay fever and other allergies such as antihistamines
- medicines for mental problems, anxieties and psychotic disturbances
- medicines for pain such as opiate analgesics (e.g. codeine)
It is essential to tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, nutritional supplements or herbal products. In addition, don't forget to alert your doctor, if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you take illicit drugs, or if you are a smoker. Everything listed above could affect the result of treatment course.
What are the side effects?
If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
- Unusual nervousness or restlessness in children
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you'll need to contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
- headache
- dry mouth
- drowsiness or tiredness
What else should I know about loratadine?
If your condition haven't improved in 2-3 days, you should contact your doctor.
Until you know if loratadine makes you drowsy or dizzy, do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness.Do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This reduces the risk of dizzy or fainting spells.
Avoid drinking alcohol.
What is the shelf life of the pills?
- The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
