What is Clarithromycin?

Clarithromycin is an antibiotic used to treat ear, sinus, lung, throat and skin infections caused by bacterias. It is also used to treat certain bacteria that can cause stomach ulcers.

Alert your doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • you have an unusual or allergic reaction to Clarithromycin, any other medicine, foods, dyes, preservatives, or other substances
  • you are taking any prescription or nonpresciption medicine, herbal preaparation, or dietary supplement
  • you have diarrhea, blood disorder, stomach infection, severe kidney or liver problems

How to use:

  • Strictly follow your doctor's instructions.
  • Clarithromycin can either be taken with or without food.
  • Take your doses at regular intervals.
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Avoid taking double or extra doses.
  • Don't stop taking Clarithromycin untils your doctor say so.

Safety issues:

  • Contact your doctor right away if stomach pain or cramps, severe diarrhea, or bloody stools occur. Do not treat diarrhea without first checking with your doctor.
  • Clarithromycin only works against bacteria; it does not treat viral infections (eg, the common cold).
  • Long-term or repeated use of Clarithromycin may cause a second infection. Tell your doctor if signs of a second infection occur. Your medicine may need to be changed to treat this.
  • Be sure to use Clarithromycin for the full course of treatment. If you do not, the medicine may not clear up your infection completely. The bacteria could also become less sensitive to this or other medicines. This could make the infection harder to treat in the future.

  • H1 antagonists (eg, astemizole, terfenadine)
  • ergot alkaloids (eg, dihydroergotamine, ergotamine)
  • eletriptan
  • disopyramide
  • digoxin
  • cyclosporine
  • corticosteroids (eg, hydrocortisone)
  • colchicine
  • cisapride
  • cilostazol
  • carbamazepine
  • buspirone
  • benzodiazepines (eg, alprazolam)
  • aldosterone blockers (eg, spironolactone)
  • anticoagulants (eg, warfarin)
  • rifampin
  • streptogramins (eg, mikamycin)
  • quinolones (eg ciprofloxacin)
  • QT-prolongin agents (eg, sotalol, quinidine, thioridazine)
  • pimozide
  • macrolides and ketolides (eg, erythromycin, azithromycin)
  • dofetilide

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • trouble sleeping
  • severe allergic reactions ( rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, sweliing of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue)
  • severe stomach pain/cramps
  • bloody stools
  • severe diarrhea
  • confusion
  • nightmares
  • decreased urination
  • hallucinations
  • depression, emotional or mood changes
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • constipation or diarrhea
  • drowsiness or dizziness
  • dry mouth
  • headache
  • nausea
  • sexual difficulties (impotence)
  • stomach pain
  • unusual weakness or tiredness

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
