What is Benzoyl peroxide?

Benzoyl peroxide has an antibacterial effect.I t also has a mild drying effect, which allows excess dirt and oils to be washed away from the skin. Benzoyl peroxide is used to treat acne.

Alert your doctor if any of these apply to you:
  • pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • an unusual or allergic reaction to Benzoyl peroxide, other medicines, foods, dyes, preservatives, or other substances
  • you are using tretinoin (Altinac, Avita, Renova, Retin-A, Tretin-X)

How to use:

  • Follow the directions on the prescription label
  • Wash your hands before and after applying this medication
  • Do not cover the treated skin area unless your doctor has told you so
  • As a rule, Benzoyl peroxide applied one to three times daily
  • Do not stop using Benzoyl peroxide until you are told so by your doctor

Safety issues:

  • Avoid getting this medication in your mouth or eyes.
  • Avoid using benzoyl peroxide topical on wounds or on areas of eczema.
  • Avoid using skin products that can cause irritation, such as harsh soaps, shampoos, or skin cleansers, hair coloring or permanent chemicals, hair removers or waxes, or skin products with alcohol, spices, astringents, or lime.

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • severe stinging ot burning of your skin
  • severe allergic reaction
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • redness or other irritation
  • mild burning or stinging
  • dryness or peeling of treated skin
  • itching or tingly feeling

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
