What is Atropine?

Atropine is an anticholinergic. It is used to treat spasms in the stomach, intestines, and other organs. It may also be used to decrease the production of saliva and secretions of the airway or for other conditions.

Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:
  • you have adhesions between the iris and lens of the eyes, asthma, blocking of the stomach or bowel, ulcerative colitis, bleeding, angle-closure glaucoma, myasthenia gravis, difficulty urinating due to a blockage, excess acid in the stomach or throat, esophagus problems (difficulty swallowing), or bowel muscle weakness
  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, dietary supplement, or herbal preparation
  • you have a history of megacolon or a predisposition to angle-closure glaucoma
  • you have numbness due to nerve damage, prostate problems (enlarged prostate), trouble urinating, hiatal hernia, open-angle glaucoma, blockage of the bladder, or heart problems (congestive heart failure)

How to use:

  • you may take Atropine either with or without food
  • strictly follow your doctor's instructions
  • advert to Medication Guide if necessary
  • if you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can
  • avoid taking double or extra doses

Safety issues:

  • if your symptoms do not improve within a few days or if they get worse, contact your doctor at once
  • Atropine may cause drowsiness. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or performing other tasks that require mental alertness until you know how Atropine affects you
  • avoid drinking alcohol
  • tell your doctor or dentist that you take Atropine before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery

  • tricylcic antidepressants

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • avomiting
  • severe allergic reactions
  • unusual weakness
  • changes in heartbeat
  • speech disturbance
  • tightness in the chest
  • restlessness with weakness
  • confusion
  • rash
  • hallucinations
  • delerium
  • fast/irregular heartbeat
  • diarrhea
  • difficulty urinating
  • difficulty focusing your eyes
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • thirst
  • blurred vision
  • nervousness
  • constipation
  • nausea
  • decreased salivation
  • mild to severe dryness of the nose and mouth
  • decreased sweating
  • loss of taste
  • difficulty sleeping
  • hot, flushed, dry skin
  • dilation of the pupils
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • headache
  • fever
  • excitement

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
