What is Glimepiride?

Glimepiride is the first III generation sulphonylurea. It distinctly lowers the blood glucose level by both defects of NIDDM, by stimulating pancreatic beta cells to produce more insulin and induced increased activity of peripheral insulin intra cellular receptor.

Tell your doctor if any of these apply to you:

  • you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • you have diabetic ketoacidosis
  • you have liver or kidney disease
  • you are allergic to Glimepiride, any other medicine, dyes, foods, preservatives, or other substances
  • you have recently had major surgery
  • you have thyroid disease
  • you have severe injury or infection

Safety issues:

  • Visit your doctor for regular checks on your progress
  • Do not skip meals
  • Regularly check your blood sugar
  • Make sure family members know that you can choke if you eat or drink when you have serious symptoms of blood sugar

Medications that may cause changes (increase or decrease) in blood sugar:

  • male hormones or anabolic steroids

Possible side effects:

If you experience these side effects, you should contact your doctor immediately:
  • unusual tiredness or weakness
  • anxiety or nervousness, confusion, difficulty concentrating
  • unusual bleeding or bruising
  • blurred vision
  • breathing difficultiess or excessive phlegm
  • tremor or shakiness
  • cold sweats, increased sweating
  • seizures (convulsions)
  • cool, pale skin
  • fever, chills, sore throat
  • coughing up blood
  • fast heartbeat, palpitations, chest pain
  • dark yellow or brown urine
  • dizziness, drowsiness
  • excessive hunger
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you should contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • skin rash, redness, swelling, or itching
  • diarrhea
  • nausea, vomiting
  • headache
  • increased sensitivity to the sun
  • heartburn, stomach discomfort

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
