What is Fexofenadine?

Fexofenadine belongs to antihistamines. It is used to reduce allergy symptoms of hay fever (seasonal allergic rhinitis), and may reduce intching of the skin in those people with chronic itchy skin rashes.

Tell your doctor if you have any of these:

  • strange or allergic reaction to fexofenadine, terfenadine, other medicines, foods or dyes
  • if you have kidney disease
  • if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • if you are breast-feeding a baby

How to use:

Take fexofenadine with a sip of water. Don't take it with orange, apple, or grapefruit juice because it can affect the effectiveness of this medicine. Strictly follow the insructions included. Time intervals of taking evenly. Contact your doctor in case you want to give fexofenadine to children. As a rule, it is prescribed for kids, who are 6 years or older.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you forgot to take your dose, do it as soon as you remember. But be careful not to take the double dose. If only one dose was missed, you can take the rest of your scheduled doses for the day at evenly spaced intervals.

What drug(s) may interact with fexofenadine?

  • rifampin
  • ketoconazole
  • St. John's Wort
  • erythromicin
  • antacids

Also, the following medicines can make you feel drowsy:

  • alcohol
  • barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions)
  • medicines for anxiety or sleeping problems, such as alprazolam, diazepam or temazepam
  • medicines for hay fever and other allergies such as antihistamines
  • medicines for mental depression (antidepressants)
  • medicines for mental problems, anxieties and psychotic disturbances
  • medicines for pain such as opiate analgesics (e.g. codeine)
It is essential to tell your doctor if you are taking any other medicines, nutritional supplements or herbal products. In addition, don't forget to alert your doctor, if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you take illicit drugs, or if you are a smoker. Everything listed above could affect the result of treatment course.

Possible side effects:

If you have any of these side effects immediately contact your doctor:
  • cough
  • infection or fever
These side effects usually don't require medical attention (but you'll need to contact your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • menstrual changes
  • muscle pain
  • tiredness or drowsiness
  • stomach upset, comiting, nausea

What else should I know about fexofenadine?

If your condition haven't improved in 2-3 days, you should contact your doctor. Fexofenadine causes less drowsiness than most other antihistamines. Until you know if it makes you drowsy or dizzy, do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness.

Do not sit or stand up quickly, especially if you are an older patient. This reduces the risk of dizzy or fainting spells.

What is the shelf life of the pills?

  • The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
